Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS), a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries, is the largest industrial employer in Virginia, and sole designer, builder and refueler of U.S. Navy aircraft carriers and one of two providers of U.S. Navy submarines. Founded as the Chesapeake Dry Dock and Construction Co. in 1886, Newport News Shipbuilding has built more than 800 ships, including both naval and commercial ships. Located in Newport News, Va., their facilities span more than 550 acres, strategically positioned in one of the great harbors of the East Coast.

Job Shadowing

Have you ever wondered what it is like to be an engineer? Maybe you’ve wondered what modeling and simulation consists of and what kind of Information Technology careers are available at Newport News Shipbuilding. Career Pathways' job shadowing program affords students the opportunity to learn about these careers and more. The students are paired up with mentors from our engineering and information technology divisions to tour different areas of Newport News Shipbuilding to learn about ship design/engineering, ship construction areas such as welding and machining, modeling simulation and information technology. Teacher Internships

Newport News Shipbuilding offers local public school STEM educators the opportunity to take part in a two-week long paid internship during the summer. Designed specifically for educators, participants learn about the skilled trades through hands-on experiences and theory. Working with each trade in Newport News Shipbuilding allows the teachers to learn how classroom STEM initiatives are applied to the everyday lives of shipbuilders. To learn more:

Career Fairs/Speaker's Bureau

Volunteers from Newport News Shipbuilding enjoy participating in career fairs and career talks at the local schools. Career talks allows the volunteers to visit the students in a classroom setting to discuss their career at Newport News Shipbuilding and to also increase engagement/learning through hands-on demos. Many local schools offer yearly career fairs. Career Pathways volunteers attend these career fairs to encourage students to visit the Newport News Shipbuilding/Apprentice School tables to receive information on how to jump start their careers at Newport News Shipbuilding.
